Malle Jaap is the nickname for the Montelbaanstoren, a tower in Amsterdam from 1516 located at the Oudeschans 2. Where the name Montelbaanstoren originated from is a mystery. The seventeenth-century historian Olfert Dapper believed that the tower was named after the Duke of Alva, but his eighteenth-century colleague Jan Wagenaar believed it to be a reference to the French castle of Montauban.

What is clear is how the tower got its nickname Malle Jaap. In the seventeenth century, the tower's bells would ring out randomly, only to fall silent again for days on end.

The Malle Jaap t-shirt is produced in The Netherlands and made by people with a refugee background. This way we try to have a positive impact on climate, people and economy.
