While there are more towers in the Netherlands with the nickname 'Lange Jan', the Westertoren in the centre of Amsterdam is perhaps the most famous. Where the name comes from exactly is not known. 'Jan' used to be a common name. That's why people used 'Jan' in folk vernacular and, this way Amsterdam also had its own 'Lange Jan'.
